Does an elderly loved one need small home repairs this winter?

November is National Family Caregivers Month, which honors caregivers of the elderly or disabled around the country. As the days get darker and the weather gets colder, it can be especially difficult for seniors to navigate inside and outside of their homes, particularly if they are in need of long-overdue home repairs. If you’re a caregiver to a loved one or neighbor and want to ensure that their home is safe and cozy for the winter, there are a few home repair areas where Fixer can be of service.

Doors/Door Handles

If the doors in your loved one’s home are sticking or jamming, not wide enough for their wheelchairs or other equipment, or letting the cold winds draft through the sides or bottom of the door frame, our skilled Fixers can help. We’ve repaired or newly installed thousands of doors – and our main goal is to provide warmth and comfort to your loved ones during the colder seasons.

If your loved one suffers from arthritis or some other joint issue, one way to ease the pain of opening up a door is to change a door knob to a door lever or handle. Doing so will help alleviate any grip issues and make it easier for door opening and closing (and it’s easier for pets to open lever handles too!). One word of caution, however, is to watch clothing or any long straps (like a purse), as they can get caught on the lever accidentally.

Smart Home Products

Smart home products are a great option if you don’t live full-time with your loved one. We can check to verify that the carbon monoxide detector is functioning correctly, or install smart home options for thermostats and fire/carbon monoxide detection. If you can’t be there all the time, these smart home options are simple to set up and operate, can maintain a comfortable temperature, and notify homeowners if something is off.

Grab bars

Grab bars throughout the home are an excellent home improvement option for the elderly as they go about their day. Typically, you’d see grab bar equipment near the bathtub or toilet to assist with mobility issues, but they can be installed in hallways or stairways to make sure seniors have something to hold on to in case they feel unsteady.

Outdoors

In the event of ice and snow outside of an elderly person’s home, stair treads will come in handy this winter. They allow for stability and friction to avoid slips and falls. We can also check the lighting on the outside of the home so that visibility doesn’t become an issue.

A caregiver’s first concern is often for the safety and wellbeing of their elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors. If you know of an elderly or disabled person whose winter would be greatly improved by a few home repairs this season, contact us. Our skilled Fixers are able to efficiently perform small home repairs in one visit and we will gladly provide you peace of mind to keep your loved one’s home safe and cozy.
