How to Elevate the Look of Your Home with Wall Treatments

Do you love character and charm? Do cookie-cutter homes make your cringe a little? Well, don’t fret, no matter what your home looks like you can make it uniquely yours by adding some wall treatments that really make a statement. Wall treatments can take a room from boring to beautiful in no time! There are so many fun, trendy options out there to pick from. Let’s take a look at some popular on-trend options!

I know, I know, some of you may have hoped wallpaper was out of style and never coming back! I don’t blame you, but hear me out. Wallpaper is making a comeback, but it’s not your typical wallpaper of the past. Advances in technology have led to the production of more durable papers, longer-lasting dyes, and easier application and removal of wallpapers like peel & stick varieties.

If you’re still not convinced and you need a professional interior designer’s opinion let me just tell you that Joanna Gaines, a household name in the design world, has her own Magnolia Home Wallpapers. From bold designs to delicate touches, from classic motifs to modern styles, Magnolia Home wallpapers offer something for everyone. If this is starting to pique your interest check it out here! She is not the only one either! If you watch HGTV you may know Drew and Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers. They also have a line of peel and stick wallpapers at Lowe’s called Scott Living! If you’re not fully committed to the idea of covering an entire wall in wallpaper, even if it is the peel and stick kind, I have another option for you, large-scale decals.

Large Scale Decals

Large-scale decals are actually really stunning and can really add interest to an underwhelming space with little effort. These can get pricey, but they can really add the perfect touch to a bedroom, laundry room, or are even great for apartment living! You can also get creative and place them strategically around furniture pieces allowing for some negative space that a full sheet of wallpaper doesn’t allow. To check out some beautiful designs visit Urban Walls on Etsy. This may be my best-kept secret yet!

Board & Batten

Board & Batten is not new to the design world but has gained traction in the past few years with the popularity of modern farmhouse design. Because of its timeless look, board and batten is becoming increasingly popular. It can make a room appear bigger and can really elevate the look of a builder grade home. Many DIYers are also taking on the task themselves so there is no shortage of online tutorials on how to achieve this look!

Another timeless wall treatment is shiplap. In the ever-popular HGTV show, “Fixer Upper” Joanna Gaines uses this material as her signature design mark. As the show has evolved and the use of shiplap has progressed we are seeing less of the white shiplap and more use of deep colors like matte black and jeweled tones of green.

Slatted Wood

I have been so drawn to this architectural trend lately! It can be used in a plethora of ways and, in my opinion, is just stunning. If you want to make a statement you may want to consider this clean, modern architectural design element! Natural slatted wood installations can be a contemporary backdrop to shelving, artwork, and wall sconces, like other styles of wall paneling that are alternatives to shiplap. Slatted wood doors can also be a modern alternative to solid barn or closet doors as the slats hide just enough to disguise media or items, not in use. With exterior installations, they can provide privacy, but also allow light to filter in during the day. This style can also provide a backdrop for artwork or add a striking focal point to any room!

Paint is still the #1 way to transform a room and people are getting creative with ways to use paint other than painting a whole room one solid color. Creating geometric shapes using paint and also using paint with a different sheen to create patterns are a couple of different ways to use paint in a creative way to elevate the look of your space.Geometric shapes created using paint, Photo by Collov Home Design on UnsplashGeometric shapes created using paint, Photo by Collov Home Design on Unsplash

When choosing a paint color for your walls people often overlook the ceiling or even the trim. Ceilings are typically painted a flat white, but they don’t have to be! If you have plenty of natural light in your room and are going with a lighter color for the walls consider painting the ceiling too instead of just leaving it white. You could even consider painting it a lighter variation of the color you chose for your walls, or maybe even a complementary color.
