Handy Home Spring Checklist

As the chill of winter fades away and the warmth of spring arrives, it’s time to shake off the cobwebs and give your home the care it deserves. With the change in seasons comes a list of essential maintenance tasks to ensure your home stays in top-notch condition. Spring Home Checklist: Doors and Windows

Check your windows for opening, closely, and locking properly. Make sure to add lubrication or replace lock hardware to any windows that may need it.
If your home has storm windows, take them out for the season and put them back in storage.
If you removed your window screens for winter time, take them out from storage and put them back in your windows.
Inspect your window screens and replace any damaged window screen material.
Check your doors for opening, closely, and locking properly. Doors tend to need repairs over time, especially exterior doors. Common repairs we see at Fixer include fixing alignment, installing new locks or knobs, repairing the door frame, jamb, or threshold, repainting, or adding new weatherproofing materials to the door frame.
Inspect the caulking around your doors and windows for damage or wear. Remove the old caulking and replace with new caulking if needed.

Spring Home Checklist: Air Conditioner System

Change or clean your HVAC filter, along with any additional air filters you may have.
Run a pre-season AC checkup, by turning the unit on to make sure it’s working properly.
If your home uses any window or portable AC units, take them out of storage and install them in your window sills.
Clean your air vent covers or registers located on your floors, walls, or ceilings.
Upgrade your thermostat to smart device or change the batteries in your existing thermostat.

Indoor Maintenance and Cleaning Tasks

Check to see if your sump pump is in good working order.
Snake your bathroom shower, bathtub, and sink drains.
Clean your shower heads.
Clean and refresh your kitchen sink garbage disposal.
Replace any water filters in your home.
Clean your jacuzzi bathtub jets.
Clean your dishwasher filter.
Change any burnt out light bulbs and dust off light fixtures in the process.
Clean behind and under your kitchen and utility room appliances.
Vacuum out and clean your clothes dryer vent and hose.
Run a washing machine clean cycle and remove the filter for cleaning (if your machine has a removable filter).
Test all your smoke and CO detectors around your home. Swap out batteries or upgrade devices if needed.

Exterior water spigot checkup: turn your exterior water spigot valve back on for the season. Uncover any water spigots from winterizing materials. Bring your garden hoses out from storage and setup on the spigots.
Pressure wash areas around your property to include: deck, patio, walkways, driveway, fence, and house siding.
Inspect your wooden gate, fence, deck, railings, windowsills and steps for rotting issues. Repair or replace damaged wood, and repaint if needed.
Make repairs to your fence gate if needed. At Fixer, common issues we see include: fixing alignment, replacing a lock, latch, or handle, fastening existing hardware, and replacing a wooden board or two.
Check on your mailbox to see if it needs any repairs or replacing.
Bring your patio furniture, planters, outdoor rug, or kids play equipment out from storage and set up for the season.
Inspect your automatic garage door to make sure it’s functioning properly, add any lubrication if needed.
Inspect your outdoor mounted garage door keypad or replace if needed.
Replace your sensor light bulbs if needed, or upgrade light fixtures to smart home devices.
Mount any newly purchased smart home security cameras, such as Ring, Arlo, Google, Simplisafe, Blink, etc.
